COMPASS AND MAP OF THE ROOMS OF DESTITUTE VISION

0000 STILL PROCESSING AT NXT, AMSTERDAM, NL.

Curated by Bogomir Doringer and Inspired by my Research on Resolutions: Destitute Vision

Last week, NXT Museum in Amsterdam opened Still Processing, a group exhibition curated by Bogomir Doringer and inspired by my research on resolutions. The show builds on my research into resolutions, proposing that images are non-static objects, which keep transforming—throughout both technical processes and via (human) perception.

Alongside my work, the show includes large-scale installations by six other artists (Children of the Light and Gabey Tjon a Tham, and others). Inviting visitors to examine how images may remain analog (in the form of light, perceived by the eyes and processed by the brain) to digital forms, compressed, traversing platforms and ultimately shifting into synthetic representations.

My part consists of seven artworks (new or remastered) displayed across four rooms, each introducing a phase of contemporary image processing.

Although my works are presented in a modular, non-linear fashion, visitors will find a framework in ROOM 0000, where a sigil (compass) placed on a map (an Ecology of Compression Complexities), introduces four phases of contemporary image processing (each represented in a separate room).

The Angel of History and her sigil (compass) appear throughout—sometimes as a protagonist and sometimes in a more peripheral role
                                        DESTITUTE VISION

My four Rooms of Destitute Vision elaborate on these phases of image processing:

0000 - The Transition from Analog to Digital
THE COLLAPSE OF PAL (2010, a special presentation, almost next to where it was originally shot - on the shores of the river IJ, re-mastered for the occasion)

0001 - Digital Image Processing (and compression) DCT:SYPHONING (2015-2017, JPEG Compression blocks in Flatland, following a special staircase render)

0010 - The Platformed Image
THE DE/CALIBRATION ARMY
(performing a desktop choral, based on research started in 2017), a new three-screen render, investigating bias and objectification in image calibration and beautification software.

0011 - The Synthetic Image
IM/POSSIBLE RAINBOWS
(2023-2025), a 30-screen installation exploring how different phases of perception, including A.I. processes, alter and diminish color—in this case, the rainbow. Inspired by my 2023 Enter the Hyper-Scientific – EPFL-CDH Artist in Residence.

AN ALGORITHM CAN BECOME A MYTH,

0001 REFRACTIONS AT iMAL, BRUSSELS, BE.

Because of its success, the group show “fin et debut" at iMAL has been extended until March. My work Refractions presents the Angel of History, on a mission to learn from a cyclops’ vision.

Refractions contemplates new ways of seeing—ranging from observing through alternative eyes to embracing decentralized perspectives.

Refractions is a research project initiated during my residency at NeMe in Cyprus in 2022. It has since expanded iteratively.

Excerpt from a review in de Witte RAAF (nr. 233):
"Are we blind to the fact that technologies arise from compromises, the need for standards, and broad-brush perspectives? Do we allow these restrictive technologies to define our society’s visions of the future? Once again, the relentless drive for progress is being called into question.

Menkman’s film draws a powerful analogy with the supreme Germanic god Wodan, who sacrificed an eye for insight into the future and continued on as a cyclops, half-blind. Belief in progress and technological determinism can distort our vision and even blind us."
